  1. What inspires you to serve as a member of the Manhattan Parks & Recreation Foundation Board?
Vern Hendricks’ focus on the GMCF strategic planning committee, Gail’s leadership and the overarching focus that we need to stop complaining about kids behavior and start helping move it in the right direction – historically sports involvement at all levels had filled part of that requirement then everything got watered down – at the youth level to the point that budget constraints began limiting programs.
  2. Which Parks & Recreation program or activity do you enjoy the most?
Clearly youth sports programs – it was there for our kids – I want it to be there for others – so many worthy values in team sports – not just for the gifted but for all kids at all levels – shouldn’t just be a travel team culture – we have nearly eliminated the emphasis on gym class sports (remember when we ALL played flag football, softball, volleyball etc in gym class).
  3. What's your go-to activity to promote a healthy and balanced lifestyle for both you and your family?
We use gym equipment and walk mostly – we are very active riding horses, golfing and doing winter sports.
  4. Can you share a memorable experience you or your family have had being involved in Manhattan Parks & Recreation activities?
Yes – my youngest son played flag, football, basketball and baseball in youth sports – they were all very important in his development.  The parent coaches were all excellent (I was one – haha) and all provided a different perspective.  He went on to play baseball in college – but even when he was playing in high school, he would play summer league baseball for fun and was a helpful mentor and teammate.  He got to play other positions than what he played competitively – it was just great.
